KANSAS DEMOCRATIC PARTY & KANSAS GOP LEADERSHIP ALIGNED ON STATE PROCESS FOR PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE PRIMARY
Chair Jeanna Repass (KDP) & Chair Danedri Herbert (KGOP)
TOPEKA, KS – In a show of bipartisan unanimity, the Chairs who lead the Kansas Democratic Party and the Kansas GOP agree that making the presidential preference primaries permanently state-run is the best avenue to ensure Kansas voters have a voice in the national race every four years.
Prior to the 2024 presidential preference primary which was held on March 19, 2024, and run by the state of Kansas; both political parties bore the full brunt of running either state-wide caucuses or primaries to decide which presidential candidate would receive Kansas’s delegates. Those delegates decide the eventual party nominee for each respective political party. Chairwoman Repass and Chairwoman Herbert agree on the overall benefit of extending the decision by lawmakers in 2024 into permanent state law along with a push for the primary to be on Super Tuesday to help bring more attention to Kansas.
QUOTE FROM CHAIR HERBERT: “This change will encourage potential presidential nominees to visit with grassroots Kansans, earn our votes and guarantee that Sunflower State voters are active participants in selecting nominees to be the leader of the free world.”
QUOTE FROM CHAIR REPASS: “Kansas voters represent the common sense middle of the country. And our voters deserve to have their voices heard by the candidates who will be running for president. We are united in the belief that these presidential preference primaries will help make sure that candidates respect Kansas voters and their voices are heard."
In a show of bipartisanship, the two Chairwomen plan to appear together and give testimony to the Kansas Legislature on Tuesday January 27th at the House committee hearings on elections. Both Chairs will be addressing the need for this change because it is the best path forward for Kansas as the state chooses presidential candidates in the future.
